We are sharing an important safety alert following multiple concerning reports affecting members of the Nepali community in different States, including in the Research Triangle Park (RTP) area.
What’s happening
Reports describe an individual targeting young women, especially recent migrants or those new to the area, by presenting himself as helpful, friendly, and trustworthy.
Incident Reported:
• Offers driving lessons and rides (sometimes charging more than Uber/Lyft for rides); • Assists with job searches (especially cash-based work), then later asks for money;
• Helps with groceries, driver’s licenses, housing, or roommate arrangements;
• Frequently checks in, calls, or messages to build familiarity and dependency;
• Invites women to his home and/or private gatherings.
Over time, after building trust, such behavior reportedly escalates:
• Introducing inappropriate or sexual topics into conversations;
• Suggesting or pressuring women into uncomfortable situations or relationships; • Testing boundaries with subtle comments before becoming more direct;
• Persistently contacting women even after they say no or try to disengage;
• Repeated calling, messaging, or using different numbers/accounts;
• Attempting to create guilt, pressure, or obligation (“after all I’ve done for you”); • Showing up uninvited, waiting near homes, or following individuals;
• Using intimidation or making women feel unsafe when they refuse.
This pattern reflects:
Grooming - A pattern of behavior where someone slowly builds trust, friendship, or dependency to later manipulate, control, or exploit the person. It often starts with helpful or kind actions and gradually becomes inappropriate (building trust to later exploit).
Harassment - Repeated unwanted behavior such as calls, messages, or contact that continues even after the person has said no or shown discomfort. It can create fear, stress, or emotional distress (repeated unwanted contact).
Exploitation of vulnerability - Taking advantage of someone’s personal situation, such as being new to a country, lacking support, or needing help, with the intent of gaining control, benefit, or access to them (targeting those new, isolated, or in need of help).
